Townsville bulletin –  sunset cinema a huge success

A “ONE-OFF” event has been added to Townville’s annual social calendar after organizers of The Strand Sunset Cinema hailed the first screening a huge success. About 6000 people piled into Strand Park with their deckchairs, beanbags, blankets and make shift couches to enjoy the city’s first event of its kind on Friday and Saturday nights. Event chairperson Heidi Hatherell said crowd numbers were well above expectations as city residents obviously embraced the family movie sessions. “We were expecting about 1000 people to come through over the two days so we smashed those numbers,” she said. “It was so much fun and it is amazing when reality exceeds wildest expectations.” The public voted to watch Brave and Serendipity and How to Train Your Dragon and E.T. on Saturday. Moviegoer Karli Stewart said it was the first time her three children Jaxson, 7, Toby, 5, and Hannah, 3, had experienced an outdoor movie. “It was a fantastic night and we all had so much fun,” she said. “My kids absolutely loved it and it was great they had the chance to do something a little different. “We really want there to be an- other one next year – we will definitely come back.” MS Hatherell confirmed that the committee was already planning next year’s event. “We had planned only one but the feedback has been phenomenal so we want to continue and plan the next one and get more sponsors on board,” she said. “We really wanted to create an event that promoted creativity and added diversity in Townsville. “How regular we hold them will depend on support.”
